How to Buy Books and Not Be a Jerk

You want a book.  I get it. I like them too.   This is a bookshelf in my house.

You do not need the book tomorrow. You don't. You're a grown person who can wait a week.  And since you can wait a week, you can order that book from an independent bookstore and not Amazon.  Why would you do this?  Because independent bookstores are wonderful, amazing places that are currently in financial trouble and you can help them!  Jeff Bezos is not wonderful or amazing and he is certainly not in financial trouble.

Need places to order from?  Try these:

IndieBound will help you find an independent bookstore near you.

If you like audiobooks, Libro.fm will sell you audiobooks and the sale will benefit an independent book store of your choosing. (Ditch Audible!  Go Indie!)

If you want eBooks, try My Must Reads; again, you can buy an eBook and the sale will benefit an independent bookstore.

When you buy from an Indie, they might surprise you with a cool wrapping paper, stickers, and pins! Like this lovely package I got from Bank Square Books when I ordered from them:

That's also a first edition of Gideon The Ninth by Tamsyn Muir with super cool black edges which was really hard to find.  When I emailed Bank Square Books about it, they hunted for this edition for me! Amazon would not hunt this down for me!  Bank Square Books is amazing!

So order that book from an independent store, not from Jeff. You can do this. You are an online person who just read an online blog post and possibly even clicked some links to other places online.  You are capable of looking at IndieBound, finding an independent bookstore you want to support, then going to their website and ordering from them.  I believe in you.

Look at McNally Jackson's windows.  They get it.
